Best things to do when you wake up
I don’t know if it’s my creative sensitivity that has always drawn me to night rather than morning, but I always struggle to do anything productive in the first hour after waking up. Check out the best things to do when you wake up in the morning and try to implement and bring out the best in you.
So many mornings I wake up doing two uninspired things.
- Check my phone, check out new email, and my social media feeds
- Turn on the TV and watch the news for an hour, usually the unnecessary debates
The problem with filling my life with screens for the first hour of the day is that it totally affects my productivity. I struggle to get inspired after watching TV too long in the morning, getting stuck on my phone and achieving next to nothing. It’s relaxing I think, but it doesn’t affect my productivity.
For the past few days I’ve been trying to mix up my activities when I wake up and I’ve finally had a lot more success through the morning and more productivity through the day!
Here are best things to do when you wake up
OK, don’t take the title too literally!
What is the first thing you do in the morning on your diary?
It is vital to work on your business that is not in it. Take a second to think about what is the first thing to do when you get off the bed. Drink coffee? (It goes without saying!) No, most of us turn on our mobile or may be television and just continue wasting time and days goes on.
Keep the screens off for 30 minutes
This is the most important change I’ve made in the last week, and I’ve already noticed a huge difference in my attitudes for the rest of the morning.
We’re wired in such a way that we want to check our phones right away, make sure we haven’t missed anything in the few hours we slept, and it’s a practice I finally stopped.
I’m checking one thing – my email. I have an early morning email in my inbox once every few weeks. I just have to answer for some reason that I shouldn’t wait for. But I’ll leave this deep dive into the social media feed for later. For at least thirty minutes. After all, everything will still be there in half an hour.
Take some time after waking up from all of the screens in our lives. We’re so pressed for time these days that a few minutes away from the screens first thing in the morning will bring you a world of good!

This is something I used to do all the mornings in my twenties, and I finally tried to get it working again. Exercise is definitely one of the best things to do when you wake up. It’s positive effects are seen only if you keep it continue for years and will be benefited during old age when you require it most.
That was how long I used the morning and afternoon to do my writing and teaching tasks, and then going for a run or the gym in the early evening when all the important tasks were done.
But, you know what? Mixing things up is important sometimes, and I’ve finally started getting my dogs on a few short runs in the morning rather than afternoon or evening. They’re always more energetic in the morning anyway, so it works out for all three of us!
You are a special star so always exercise and keep shining.
You can do any type of exercise you want. Personally, I like to go jogging in the neighborhood. It’s free, it’s easy, you get some fresh air, and you can be there and back in thirty to forty minutes.
My gym is a ten minute drive away. So when I go to the gym there is 20 minutes more on top of the workout. That’s why I usually save the gym for the weekends and go running between Monday and Friday.
The most important thing about morning exercise is that it benefits you in several ways for the rest of the day. Exercising first will keep you physically and mentally fit. It will get you excited for the day ahead. You will be motivated to be more productive for the rest of the morning and all day!
Drink green tea
Okay, okay, you can have coffee too, of course, but I’ve always found a cup of green tea to start my day off great.
Green tea has so many benefits. It’s such a healthy drink and once you start drinking it every day you really develop a taste for it. I crave it every morning now and always notice a small improvement in my mood after drinking it.
Now a couple of things about green tea. I feel sick if I drink it on an empty stomach, and you may feel sick too. It’s best to drink it with some food. It doesn’t have to be a full breakfast if you don’t want it. It can be something small, like some fruit or a slice of toast with peanut butter. But eat with it if you can.
Also, keep in mind that green tea contains caffeine so you don’t want to drink too much of it. My advice is two cups a morning of tops.
Green tea is as important for body as everyday morning bath
Also, be careful not to drink the tea when it is too hot. I actually read articles on how drinking too much hot tea can damage your throat day in and day out! So, enjoy green tea in moderation and make sure it’s lukewarm before drinking it.
And for me, the most comfortable way to start the day is reading physical books.
Physical books again, no e-readers! I always have at least three in my drawer next to my bed and I always turn over as the weeks go by. I recently told some friends that I read one book a week and they were shocked. They asked me how.
I said I read for at least thirty minutes after waking up and usually read in the bathroom for thirty minutes at the end of the night.
Read an hour a day and I can usually go through one book a week depending on its length. I’m not a quick reader at all. I actually read pretty slowly. But just like a little bit of writing every day can lead to tons of words a year, a little bit of reading every day can also enable you to read lots of great books all year round!
A good book is equal to ten good friends.
Better still, reading is a great way to start the morning because it strengthens your mind. Instead of just mindlessly scrolling through social media feeds and watching the news and tons of commercials, start the day by feeding your mind without ruining it. Reading is great relaxation and a fantastic way to start the day!
I went on a meditation hike for the first time in my life few months back and afterwards I am having the most wonderful mornings.
My mother and me went through a forest and enjoyed short and long meditations during the hike. It was like I was on cloud nine for the rest of the day.
I always feel like adding to your time and increasing your productivity throughout your day is a waste of time. There are many meditations that you can try. You can only do it for five or ten minutes if you want!
There are so many ways that you can find inner peace in your bed before you overcome the craziness of your day. Finding something that puts you at ease first will help you for hours. Meditation is definitely something to look out for.

Take a shower and put on fresh clothes
Wake up from the bed with fresh energetic soul. This is one of the easiest things to do, and one of the most helpful! As a writer, I have many days when I sit around the house in my pajamas and write, write, write, sometimes until 4 or 5 p.m. before I jog and take a shower. I think I’ll work out later. So why take two showers on my day? I’m not going anywhere so I just stick with my PJs.
The thing is how you feel, what you will accomplish as the day progresses. And there’s something about your PJs that makes you feel worthless, unemployed, lazy. Even if you are not lazy.
When you shower and change into fresh clothes, tell yourself that you are here, present, and will throw the shit out of the day as best you can. You show up for yourself and not lounge around in your PJs for hours.
Write for five minutes
This applies to both writers and non-writers. This goes for everyone! Writing is one such therapeutic activity. You can put your thoughts down, work your ideas through, and be as creative as you want.
Writing in the morning will surely gives you fresh thoughts!
One thing I like to do in the morning after waking up is take my little red notebook out of my desk drawer and write for five minutes. Sometimes those five minutes of writing are ideas for a new story.
Sometimes a strange dream I just had is presented in as much detail as possible. Often it is just writing to write!
Free-writing, is always the best. Because there is never a wrong answer. It’s just a way to put ideas down. You don’t even have to read your paper after those five minutes are up.
Put the notebook away, then maybe pull it up again in the evening and see what you have written. Sometimes it’s bullshit that doesn’t matter, but sometimes there’s a nugget in there that is helpful and inspiring!
Cuddle with your pets
I can’t tell you what difference my two Golden doodles made in my life over the past year. They are the cutest things ever. They love to play, love to cuddle. And never more than first thing in the morning in bed. How lucky are we to have dogs anyway, am I right?
Sure, my dogs get in trouble sometimes (they ripped open one of my favorite books in the back yard last week, gasp!), But for the most part, they’re pure love, and it’s great to snuggle with them first thing in the morning to start my day.
No need to apologize if all you want to do is cuddle with your pet for 20 minutes. It’s always important to start each day on a positive note. What is more positive than having loving animals by your side?
Eat dessert first
Another excuse not to be made? Eat dessert first! We are so programmed to have a certain type of thing for breakfast, a certain type of thing for lunch. And of course, you’re programmed to save that particular candy for the end of your day.
Sure, I love having dessert at the end of a long day. It’s so relaxing to have a delicious dinner followed by something chocolaty, hearty. I try to be good I try to switch my desserts between healthy and not so healthy. I try not to go completely crazy with my candy.
But one last thing to do when you wake up and have dessert first. No, you don’t have a huge bowl of ice cream or a slice of caramel swirl cheesecake. But a little sweetness in your mouth can fill you with joy, and what’s wrong with that? Some of my favorites for the morning – a piece of dark chocolate, a chocolate-coated strawberry, or a banana care style.
The last dessert works almost like breakfast because it’s actually pretty healthy and mixes low-fat cottage cheese with sliced bananas and 100% maple syrup. It is important that you don’t complain first thing in the morning. You want to feel your best. So find something sweet that makes you happy, that makes you feel good, and then you’re on your way!
Do what works best for you
You don’t have to try all of these things in the first hour of your day.
Instead, I’d pick three or four of these and try to try at least one of them every morning. Try it for a couple of days and then switch to something else if you want. Maybe mix two or three of these. And see how you feel. See what feels right, what inspires you most and makes you most productive.
Other tasks you could do when you wake up are-
- Take a small ride with your bicycle.
- Take a bare foot walk on lush green grass.
- Go out on a walk with kids.
- Go out in the park and have loud laughter therapy.
That first hour after you wake up is absolutely critical to the success of your day.
Try some of these things and find out what works best for you!
