What’s the Noorward Scale (or Hamilton-Norwood Scale)?
There are several other classification scales that are used by doctors, researchers, and hair transplant surgeons.
However, the Norwood scale is the measurement most commonly used by doctors when it comes to male pattern baldness. It provides a point of reference for diagnosing the extent of hair loss or baldness, discussing treatment options, and measuring treatment effectiveness.
What are the 7 stages of hair loss?
The Norwood scale consists of seven levels. Each phase measures the severity and pattern of hair loss.
This stage is the control level. People with stage 1 male pattern baldness still have a full head of hair with little to no sign of hair loss or a hairline receding.
There is a slight recession of the hairline around the temples. This is also known as an adult or mature hairline. The baldness near the temples has moved further inward, creating the common M-shaped hairline that is common in many men.
The first signs of clinically significant baldness appear. The hairline is deepened on both temples and resembles an M, U or V shape. The recessed areas are completely bald or sparsely covered with hair.
Level 3 apex. The hairline remains in stage 2, but there is significant hair loss on the top of the scalp (the apex).
The hairline recession is more severe than stage 2 and there is sparse or no hair at the apex. The two areas of hair loss are separated by a hair band that connects to the hair that remains on the sides of the scalp.
In stage 4A, a person does not have a bald spot on the back of the head, but instead loses the dips in the hairline and has a deeper U shape when viewed from above.
The two areas of hair loss are larger than in Stage 4. They are still separate, but the hair band between them is narrower and more sparser than in the previous stage.
In stage 5 A,the hairline continues to the back of the head.
When you reach this stage of male baldness, you have managed to lose a large part of your hair. Your hairline has sneaked up to the top of your head, and the small hair that remains on your crown is thin, providing minimal coverage to your scalp.
Think of this stage as full baldness. This is the classic horseshoe or dead end pattern, with the top of the head remaining completely bare. Unfortunately, if you make it to Level 6 without taking any action, your chances of having your hair restored will be slim.
Causes of hair Loss
Now, some of these factors they’re a some of the causes little bit strange, and that’s what’s going to make this blog fun and informative as well.
Here I will outline and discuss all the possible factors related to hair loss or hair fall.
1. Family history
Hair Lossis a common problem and this factor is heard often many times in men, you guys have heard this before, family history and a lot of you guys are going to say, oh, it comes from your mother’s side.
So, what’s the simple answer here? Your grandfather on your mother side, he doesn’t have his hair, on your dad side, he does have his hair, does that mean you’re going to lose your hair?
A big No. There are actually 287 different genomes that have to be mapped and have to come out of separate weight.
Now, what they found in a 2005 study coming out of the University of Bonn is that it’s actually a specific androgen receptor gene that depending on how that plays out, how it shapes, how it looks, that actually is going to determine whether or not you go bald.
Hair loss caused by stress is usually only temporary. If you’ve lost hair as a result of stress or anxiety, there’s every chance it will start to grow back once your stress levels are back to normal. Any hair lost due to stress should grow back on its own in a few months.
Let’s have a look at different types of hair fall linked to stress:
·Telogen Effluvium – This is actually where the stress puts your hair in a resting state for longer than it should be. This can lead to massive hair loss, basically where your hair just rest and then it starts to fall out because it’s not basically growing and not doing what it needs to do.
Trichotillomania- This is where stress leads you to pulling on your hair and you literally pull out. Now, on average a guy will lose fifty to a hundred and fifty hairs a day, but when you’re pulling on it, you’re going to lose a lot more and overtime, this habit can lead to hair loss.
Alopecia Areata- This is where in high levels of stress your body actually start to attack your hair. I’m not sure how this happens, but it’s a real thing. In this, Hair Loss starts in patches form from head. The point here, gents, stress really can lead you to losing your hair, so decompress, go for a walk, exercise.
Anabolic steroids- We know there’s a wide variety out there, but I am going to talk about steroids in general are going to lead to an increase in production of DHT(Dihydro testosterone). DHT causes baldness. So, if you’re going to be using steroids, understand that if you’re not using the prescription of a doctor that there are side effects. One of the side effects is you can lose your hair very quickly.
This is based off a 2003 study that clearly showed that whenever you smoke this affects the Microvascular of the dermal hair. So, what they found is that the smoke particles directly damage the DNA of the hair.
They also found that smoking caused an imbalance with how our scalp reacted to your hair and this imbalance could actually lead to shedding.
Gents, if that’s not bad enough, apparently it would also lead to fibrosis, so basically as the hair is shedded out you would have scarring over where basically the follicle left which would then prevent other hair from coming out.
Apart from the hair loss effects, smoking is always injurious to health as well👎.
4.Over Exercising or Physical training
Link of over exercising and hair loss. In the study, they showed guys that were burning closer to 4,000 calories a week consistently for three months, what they found is that these guys were shedding more hair than normal.
Now, the good news here is when these guys stopped over exercising all of a sudden their hair production went back up, they weren’t shedding as much hair. Gentlemen, when you exercise you’re putting stress on your body. Exercise, but don’t overdo it.
5. Wrong hair style
So, this strange factor is putting a lot of stress on the hair, this can lead to hair loss. And, what’s interesting is the research that I read on this it was all geared actually talking about women that pull their hair back in tight ponytails.
With some of these hairstyles, again, that are pulling your hair back, you’ve got to be careful, if you overdo this, if you stress the hair physically, yes, this can cause your hairline to recede or loss.
Now, when it comes to male pattern baldness, two out of three of us are going to experience it before the age of 35.
As many of you guys know, losing your hair is not an old man thing, it can happen in your 40’s, in your 30’s, in your 20’s, and even your teens.
6.Wearing a hat-
Now, this next factor is closely related to a myth, and that myth is that if you wear a hat, if you wear a head wear that’s going to lead to you losing your hair. That’s not true.
There is no research that has proven that. However, they have shown that if you wear dirty head wear, we’re talking head wear that can lead to scalp infections, then in that case, yes, this can lead to hair loss.
If you’re going to go to that trustee baseball cap all the time, make sure to wash it, make sure to clean it. It is not going to cause you to lose your hair unless you’re wearing it too long, it’s dirty, and it’s causing an infection.
Hair Loss has been highly linked to lack of iron. and this has been clearly shown in both men and women. So, where are you going to get iron, guys?
You want to add to your diet red meat, you want to add lentils, maybe liver, kidneys, spinach, raw peaches, prunes, prune juice, raw or dried apricots, broccoli tops, potato skins, almonds. Get iron into your diet otherwise you could start to lose your hair.
Now, what about foods that can prevent hair loss? There are actually some useful Natural Supplements for Hair Loss.There are a many people saying yes that the eating of eggs and specifically it’s going to be the protein and it’s going to be the biotin, two nutrients which promote hair growth.
I’ve also read some reports talking about higher intakes of Vitamin C. So, you’ll find that in oranges, lemons, you’re going to find this in berries, but basically it’s going to protect your hair from free radicals.
8. UV radiation
So over exposure to the Sun. Why is this going to damage you hair? Well, it can specifically actually damage the hair itself, it can lead to it being more brittle, it can actually the UV rays can go in there and damage the hair follicles.
But, let’s talk specifically about exposing the scalp to the sun. Let’s say you’ve got a thinning hairline up here on top, you’re thinning on the back, all of a sudden you’re out in the sun fifteen, twenty five minutes.
The problem here is you’re basically producing more of super oxide. This can prematurely age it and all of a sudden you’re going into the shedding phase earlier than you should have. Basically, you’re going to lose that time and you’re going to shed more hair.
9. Proper and Complete Sleep
If you’ve got a bad sleep pattern and not sleeping six or less hours per night. Yes, guys, you need a lot more sleep. Me, personally, eight to nine. If you’re not getting sleep, yes, you are losing your hair because you’re causing more stress on your body, you’re not giving it time to recover. Take care of your body, get more sleep.
Sleep always re-energizes your body parts as a whole.
Treatments for hair Loss
There is always debate about the hair loss treatments, how the hair loss can be reversed or at least the loss can be stopped.
Here are some of the best hair loss treatments ordered from easiest to probably most difficult but again, talk to your doctor about it to be sure that its right for you.
Finasteride is a prescription drug also known under the brand name Propecia. It has been on the market since 1997 and you just take it orally in form of a pill every day. It treats hair loss on your crown and the middle part of your scalp but not on other parts of your body.
So how exactly does it work- It blocks your DHT hormones by about 70% thus slowing down the shrinkage and shortening of your hair and therefore, you keep your hair for longer. Studies show that Finasteride has to be taken consistently in order to see the impact of it.
Side effects- Includes depression or impotence or other more severe side effects. At the end of the day, the choice is, of course yours, but in any case, talk to your doctor.
Dutasteride which is very similar to Finasteride in the sense that it blocks DHT even though its more effective in the sense that it can block up to 90% of DHT versus Finasteride only blocks up to about 70% of the DHT hormone. So obviously, it’s more effective but its not FDA approved in the US for hair loss treatment.
Minoxidil also known as the brand name Rogaine. Its an over-the-counter medication and FDA approved in the US for hair loss treatment. Interestingly, its supposed to be used around the crown of your scalp only and nowhere else. Its basically a foam that you have to apply to your crown twice a day in order to be effective.
On top of that, this tube that lasts for a month supposedly, costs $34 so that’s more than a dollar a day.
Advantages- Rogaine or Minoxidil has shown to reduce the loss of hair in men. In a one-year study, 62%of the male participants said that they experienced a reduction in hair loss when they used it. 84% of the men found it to be moderately effective for hair regrowth.
Disadvantages- Rogaine are if you stop using it, everything goes downhill again. So if you start using it, you have to keep using it twice a day which is just too much of a commitment for me. Side effects include scalp and skin irritation. Once again, talk to your doctor about details.
3. Hair Transplantation
This is not a drug but it works actually by moving hair follicles from areas where you have a lot of hair to areas where you don’t have a lot of hair. Yes, it sounds like a lot of work and it is because every single follicle from the back or from the side of your scalp has to be relocated. Because of that, it takes a lot of time, is therefore very costly, and can also cause a lot pain.
Of course, there is a risk associated with the surgery such as bleeding or scarring. Also, most men have anywhere between two and four hair transplantation treatments so its not just a one and done kind of deal.
These days, it looks very natural if done properly. Many men who have hair transplantation take Rogaine or Minoxidil afterwards to just keep reducing the loss of their hair. There are many well-known men out there including Elon Musk and Kevin Costner who have used it.
4. Laser Therapy
It’s also known as low light therapy or cold laser therapy and it works in the way that photons are irradiated onto your scalp thus helping to increase the circulation on your scalp. The idea is that the photons stimulate the circulation in your scalp and therefore, help your hair growth.
While more circulation is a good thing for your hair, blood flow alone can reverse the shrinkage of your hair. To see results, clinical hair laser treatments have to be done several times a week, especially in the beginning. Overtime, it will be less but its still quite a time commitment and its also very costly.
Typically, you spend several thousand dollars a year. At the moment, there is not enough data that can show that laser therapy over a long term is very effective when it comes to preventing hair loss. Even though there are some encouraging results, data is inconsistent at best. Furthermore, long-term safety and effectiveness have not been established yet.
Hair loss is linked to several reasons over the time period. Keep your hairs clean and healthy. My personal opinion is to use natural supplements in case of hair loss.
