In most cases, this is a completely irreversible condition, annoying and does not represent a serious or chronic medical problem. However, many people are worried about headaches and may indicate that this is more serious.

What causes this headache?

Headache is one of the most common medical complaints. Most people experience it at some point in their lives. They can affect anyone, regardless of age, race or gender.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that more than half of adults worldwide experience headaches every year.
The headache may be a sign of stress or emotional distress, or it may be the result of a medical condition, such as a migraine or high blood pressure, anxiety or depression.
Headache may occur on any part of the head, on either side of the head, or in one place.
There are different ways to define headaches.
Headaches can manifest on their own, but are also a very common symptom in neck pain patients as more than 60% of patients with a primary neck pain complaint report of having concordant episodes of headache. Therefore, it’s essential to find out what kind of headache the patient is suffering from.
To start off, let’s differentiate between Primary headaches and Secondary types of headaches.

But what does that mean?

Simply put, primary headaches are the disease themselves, whereas in secondary headaches, the headache is a symptom of another condition.
So primary headaches would be Tension-type headaches, Migraines and Cluster headaches.
Secondary type headaches are headaches caused by tumors, hemorrhage, other trauma, TMJ dysfunction, and substance overdose or neck pain like the cardiogenic headache.

Tension-type headache

These are a primary type headache.
Tension-type headaches have a mean 1-year prevalence of 48.6% around the world with women being equally as often affected as men in an age range between 20 to 40.
Tension headache is the most common type of primary headache.
75 to 90% of people with headaches experience tension headaches. Tension headache is a faint and persistent pain that occurs in more than one event.
Pain usually increases in hours. At its worst, pain has responsiveness.

Where it Occurs Generally

A person with tension headaches suffers  in the part of the head, scalp and neck.
They happen on both sides of your head. It can occur as a constant or as an isolated may feel stressed or tight around the head.
No person with tension headaches can have easy sleeping.
Tension-type headaches can vary from infrequent episodic, frequent episodic to chronic.
Tension-type headache, which really is a low-pressure squeezing sensation of the forehead and temples.
In order to qualify as tension-type headache, the headache has to fulfill certain criteria:
The headache lasts hours to days or is unremitting.
The patient needs to report at least 2 of the following 4 characteristics – these are:
  1. The headache is bilateral.
  2. It has a pressing or tightening quality, but not pulsating.
  3. The intensity is mild to moderate.
  4. The headache is not aggravated by routine physical activity, such as walking or climbing stairs.


Tension is the also the result of tight muscles in your neck, shoulders, skull, or jaw.
At least these muscles may be the result of stress, fatigue, depression, noise or anxiety.

Causes of Tension Headaches

  • Not getting enough  and  quality sleep.

  • Alcoholism
  • Excessive smoking
  • Sinus infections
  • Runny nose and colds.
  • Over-acting
  • Skipping meals can increase the risk of tension headaches.
Any action that requires you to hold your head for long periods of time, such as typing, using a microscope, or sleeping in an abnormal position on the neck can cause a tension.
A woman is more likely than a man to suffer from tension headaches. A tension headache usually occurs in adults and adults.
When a person has migraine headaches, tension can occur.

Cluster headache 

Cluster headache is the least common headache but by far is the most painful. It is even labelled the “suicide” headache because the most traditional therapies don’t work and some death is preferable.
Cluster headache is a disease that affects only 69 in 100,000 people in the population, much less than those who suffer from migraines, sinus headaches or one of the many other types of headaches. This is probably why it has not been really recognized by the medical community for the past 150 years and is still largely misunderstood. 
Cluster headaches get their name because the headaches tend to clusters in occurrence. They will have several times per day, the same amount of time for lasting and for the same amount of time per day.
They tend to linger for several weeks, dissipate and then re-occur with the same frequency and intensity.
These headache types are not hereditary. For people with this type of headache, they have bad headaches daily without intervals, some last for a few minutes and other mantras last for up to two hours.
There are also cluster headaches, episodic and chronic people. Episodes of these headache types can be monthly or less.
Headaches can occur twice a year.
People with episodic type cluster headaches do not live with this problem on a daily basis.
The pain tends to last an hour or less but the headaches strike several times per day.
The cause of cluster headaches is unknown but what is known is that the blood flows abnormally in the affected area, causing the blood vessels to dilate and this in turn puts pressure on the trigeminal nerve.


This type of sufferers will find more relief from migraine or tension headaches with active, rather than motionless.

Who gets this type of headache?

Unlike migraine, which affects many more women than men, the cluster affects men more than women in a ratio of 6: 1.
The first episode with cluster headache usually begins between the ages of 20 and 50. , but cases have also been reported in patients under 10 years of age and over 80 years of age.
For women, the onset is not linked to their monthly menstrual cycle and pregnant women often experience a cessation of symptoms during their pregnancy.
Taking birth control pills can also make the condition of a person with cluster headaches worse.

Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms of most migraines. So, since these symptoms are very similar, there is only one type of migraine, isn’t it?

  1. Retinal migraines are migraines that can cause you to lose sight in the eye. You will lose sight before the headache begins.
  2. Hemiplegic migraines have a frightening symptom. If you suffer from this type of migraine, there may be temporary paralysis in the part of your body that causes the migraine.
  3. Ophthalmoplastic migraines are one of the most persistent migraines. The disease begins with pain around the eyes and continues to cause eye problems throughout the migraine. Visual distortion and blurred vision are common symptoms of this type of migraine.
  4. Night time migraines are fortunately rare. They are intense enough to wake up the migraine sufferer.
  5. Basilar artery migraines are usually restricted to teenage girls or young women. This migraine develops by disrupting the basilar artery, leading to dizziness, poor coordination, vomiting and speech problems. This migraine type will gradually become a more standard classic migraine, with an effect on it.
  6. Abdominal migraines are a type of migraine that does not involve headaches. Instead, this migraine usually causes abdominal pain. Common nausea and vomiting after the onset of abdominal pain can cause other migraine types. This migraine type is most common in young children.
Lack of one or more specific nutrients, especially magnesium and some B vitamins, can sometimes cause headaches. Nutritional deficiencies can be caused by poor diet, inherent disorder, or other medical conditions.

  • Mono Sodium Amalgamate (often present in Asian and prepared foods)

Secondary headache

Secondary headaches are symptoms that occur when the nerves that are sensitive to the headache are stimulated by another condition.
In other words, symptoms of headaches may be another cause.
A wide range of different components can cause secondary headaches.
These include:
  • Alcohol-induced hangover
  • Brain tumour
  • Blood clots
  • Bleeding in or around the brain
  • Brain “Brain freeze” or ice related headaches
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • harassment
  • Dehydration
  • Glaucoma
  • Brush your teeth at night
  • Fever
  • Overuse of pain medication known as rebound headache.
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke


It is important to see a doctor if they are more severe, more frequent, or persistent, as headaches can be a sign of a serious condition.
For example, if the headache is more painful and uncomfortable than the previous headache, worsening or does not improve with medication, or is accompanied by other symptoms, such as confusion, fever, sensory changes and hardening of the back of the neck, a doctor should be contacted immediately.

Treatments for Headache.

Treatment for headache can be done in many ways. Treatments can be done either by using medicines or by natural means.
If you suffer from constant migraines, you should seek relief. Of course, there is the possibility of using drugs, but some may seek natural ways due to the side effects of the drugs (vomiting, nausea and headache.
Here I will give you natural treatments for migraines or headache that will give you the relief you are looking for.

Natural Treatments for Headache

Treatment 1 – Healthy eating
Eating well is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of headache. The reason a diet is good for keeping headaches at bay is that it keeps you healthy. Treatment 1  NASAIDs class 
Pain relievers are the first treatment drugs. These drugs are usually taken at the start of a headache. There are some broad categories used. The first are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These are over the counter medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Naprosyn (Aleeve) or Aspirin (Bufferin, Bayer).

These drugs are helpful with common everyday headaches. A number of manufacturers market combinations of drugs like these specifically for migraines. Excedrin Migraine is an example of such a drug. It contains acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine and appears to be effective against slightly more severe pain.
The biggest problem with NSAIDs is that if taken too often, they can cause stomach ulcers, bleeding in the intestines, kidneys, and liver.
Treatment 2 Triptans classs 
The next class of medication is known as Triptans-Sumatriptan (Imitrex) was the very first medication designed specifically for migraines. Imitrex binds to receptors in neurotransmitters, causing the blood vessels in the head to constrict. One of the good things about sumatriptan is that it can be used in nasal, oral, or injectable form.
However, Sumatriptan can have serious side effects, including a heart attack or stroke. Although these side effects are rare, people with a history of heart disease, angina, high blood pressure, ischemic bowel disease or heart attack or stroke should not take sumatriptan.
Treatment 3 Ergots class
The next class of drugs are ergots. Medicines like ergotamine (Ergomar) and dihydroergotamine (D.H.E.45) and dihydroergotamine nasal spray (Migranal) help relieve pain. These drugs can have more side effects than Triptans.
Treatment 4 Others
The drug Metoclopramide (Reglan) is useful in relieving the nausea and vomiting associated with migraines, but not the migraine pain itself. 
It also improves gastric emptying, which results in better absorption and faster action of many oral medications. 
It is most effective when taken early during a migraine or even during the aura before the onset of headaches. The drugs Prochlorperazine (Compazine), Chlorpromazine (Thorazine), Promethazine (Phenergan) and Hydroxyzine (Vistaril) can also relieve nausea, but have significant side effects linked with it.
Note-Before taking any medicines or going for medications, anyone must consult doctor in order to avoid unwanted complications.


Headache is thought to be very old problem since the evolution of mankind. This problem is mostly linked with the lifestyle changes in this modern age.
Headache is not so big problem, but if not taken care timely and properly it is going to be really serious and sometimes it could be life threatening.
